In 1876 Russian inventor and entrepreneur, Pavel Yablochkov created a Light called the Yablochkov Candle. It was based on what is known as the Carbon Arc Lamp. The advantage of the Candle design over carbon arc designs is that it removes the need for a mechanical regulator to maintain the appropriate distance between the carbon blocks to sustain the arc. Basically it made the light stay lit for much longer periods of time, and could be re-lit.
