    Class 1 (Class I)

Class 1 hazardous locations are areas where an explosion or fire hazard may exist due to combustible dust, vapors, and flammable gases that are present in the air.

Electrical equipment used in areas where explosive concentrations of fumes and dust exist, require to be assembled with special wiring and other electrical components to meet safety standards.

For instance, your living room light switch emits a small and harmless visible spark when switching from On to Off. In normal circumstances, this spark is not a big deal. However, if a flammable vapor is present, the arc can potentially start a fire.

    Class 1 Locations

These areas are defined as those in which flammable gas, dust, or vapors are present in the air. The quantities may be so small but sufficient to produce a fire and explode. Some Class 1 environment areas can include:

    • Gas Stations
    • Solvent extraction plants
    • Ethanol facilities
    • Aircraft hangers and fuel servicing areas
    • Utility gas plants (operations where natural gas is stored)
    • Dry cleaning plants
    • Petroleum refining facilities
    • Storage tanks that contain flammable/combustible liquids.

In North America, the hazardous location classification system was created by the National Fire Protection Association. As the world trade of electrical products and services continues to grow, international standards are converging so that more and more acceptable techniques get approved by regulatory agencies. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) is the agency that enforces regulations to make sure we comply.

    Class 1 Division 2:

Three different situations may exist to classify an area as a Class 1 Division 2 location:

    • A sector with ignitable concentrations of flammable gases or vapors that exist under normal working conditions.
    • Ignitable concentrations of gases or vapor that may frequently exist due to repair or maintenance operations or due to leakage.
    • Breakdown or faulty operations of pieces of equipment or procedures may release ignitable concentrations of flammable vapors and might also cause simultaneous failure of electric equipment.

Class 1 Division 2 LED Lights Benefits

The role of Class 1 Div 1 lights in industrial operations has tremendously increased in recent years. Hazardous locations with limited exit and entry points have adopted these type of lights because it reduces the risk connected to explosive gases such as propane and methane.
Many oil refineries in Europe and the Middle East have adopted EPL lights.

Confined Workplace And The Use Of Class 1 Division 2 Lights

Confined workplaces are dangerous by nature. These areas are considered high-risk. Limited spaces can be complicated, due to their inadequate ventilation, they tend to promote the build-up of poisonous fumes, gases, and vapors. When Class 1 Div 1 Lights are used in confined spaces dramatically reduces the risk of working isolated and in dark conditions. The impact on the performance of people working in confined areas has been significant: it increased their dependance, and their overall efficiency improved!

C1D2 Lighting Designed To Prevent Ignition

EPL Fixtures feature a thick casing that covers not only the luminaries but can cover the entire bulb. This design contains the spark from escaping in case of an explosion. If an explosion does happen, these lights reduce the risk of an explosive reaction and from spreading light particles in the location. EPL fixture lights are used in ship tanks, chemical storage units, paint spray booths, grain silos, and aircraft maintenance and repair areas, among others.
